travel blogs by kids

This is Emma's blog - she was 5 when she started writing it and turned 6 in November. She hand writes it in her diary and when I get around to it, I type it up for her.

www.ourbigworldtrip.travellerspoint.com has quite a lot written by Anica - the 8/9/yr old on the trip, and http://www.collyworld.com/ is another one. The trouble with diary keeping and blogging is it takes up too much travel time! Warn your children how much dedication it takes when they could be out experiencing the travel. I did most of mine in the evening when the kids were asleep (usually in the bathroom or lobby of guesthouse so I didn't disturb them! The cataloguing of the 10's of 1000's of photos needs to be done almost daily as well, as otherwise your memory cards get full and also you have to keep looking up where everywhere was!

We are leaving for our RTW trip this July and our 8 & 12 olds have already posted their first entry in http://blogs.bootsnall.com/midlifemeandering. They will be writing daily in their journals as part of their english curriculum but only occasionally adding to the blog. Z the son in the blog of travelswithanineyearold.com also has his own blog.

Where are you from and what is your route? We are from NYC and are going Borneo-China-Tibet-Nepal-Bhutan-India-Laos-Cambodia-Vietnam-Australia-Easter Island-Argentina-Peru-Bolivia. At that is the idea today!

@travellingmum: The blogs will be part of the kids' schooling. My daughter needs lots of work with language and this will be just one tool. She's already working with a tutor on a blog. She really likes it. I hoping it can shape her travels as well as help her remember what she's seen as a journal would.

Really what I need to say to you, however, is thanks so, so much for Collysworld.com. Turns out she lives near us and is friends of friends so we'll be getting together to get advice from the kid and the parents. What a great find!

@momof4: We're headed in the exact opposite direction. We're from California, the opposite coast from you. Our tentative itinerary is Europe/Turkey, Kenya, India, SE Asia, maybe backtrack to Bhutan for a volunteer gig, maybe head to Australia/South Pacific for the vacation at the end. So many choices, too little time.

Kids might do better with a "photo blog"...

Give them a camera...and upload the pics from flickr to blogger directly while on the road ...without signing into your blog... add comments and the back story as needed...

Besides... a picture is worth a thousand words...even if you can spell...

Kids don't follow "the rules" when doing photos... So the results can be fantastic...
