Sri Lanka - Horton Plains

Interest forums / Kids To Go

Hi all

We are going to Sri Lanka for 3 weeks in April. I was hoping to do Horton Plains/Worlds End but am now thinking I was being optimistic thinking my 7 year old daughter will walk for the 4-5 hours I have read it takes. Does anyone have any advice on how easy or hard the trail is? Also, if we were to decide to do some of the walks around Ella instead, how do they compare for scenery, or is Worlds End a 'must see'?

Would love some words of experience.

Thanks

LM

Hi there, we visited Worlds End and Ella during our first visit to Sri Lanka back in 2010 I think. We went to Worlds End and what I remember most was feeling slightly disappointed. The view was very pretty and the walk was OK with fairly easy terrain but we felt that the cost of visiting World's End was too much for what it was. On the other hand, we went on a number of walks around Ella and was amazed by the scenery and the people and best of all - it was all free and could be done within walking distance of our guesthouse. It is very hilly and might be tough for little legs but with a few rest stops, I think that should be OK. As always, that is just my opinion, others may disagree. I am sure you will have a great time whatever you do, Sri Lanka is a wonderful country to visit and we hope to take our daughter there one day.

Hi

I used to live there (pre-kids) and took my 4 year old and 1 year old there at Christmas.

Honestly, you need to think very carefully about the journey to World's End. It is LOOOOONG.

Perhaps you could go as far as Nuwara Eliya and then have a think/see how everyone is/check the weather?

If there is heavy rain, you are better off staying away.

If I only had 3 weeks in the country, I would probably do:

Colombo (for shopping and great restuarants)
South Coast (beach/turtles/more eating)
Kandy (including elephant orphanage)
possibly either Nuwara Eliya or Siguriya, depending on season/interests of party
Yala (absolute must for anyone interested in wildlife - good time to go: at the moment a v well kept secret and the best place I the world to see leopards, not to mention 1,000s of endemic species and wild elephants).

You will have a ball! Beautiful country -let me know if I can be of further assistance! :)

I'm on the other side of the age spectrum from your 7-yr-old daughter and while an occasional trekker, decided to forgo Horton plains for Ella when I was in Sri Lanka in january 2013. Walking up Little Adam's Peak (in Ella) was a pleasant half-day hike and there were several other fine walks there. From what I've heard, I don't regret our decision.
