My family and i will be spending a month in southern france in the spring. Kids are 4 and 1. Anyone have any good recommendations on country cottages, family friendly villages?

can't help with any destination ideas as i am clueless myself. however www.cottages4you seems to be a good website for finding a cottage. prices seem ok as well

Could also consider camping, mightn't be what you have in mind, but lots of grounds now have onsite cabins, "luxury" tents (I know it's all relative, but generally means they have put it up, and it is already equipped so you don't have to bring the gear) which may give you and your kids the chance to interract with more people than being in a house on your own, if that is what you are looking for in "family friendly". Just a thought...
