Hi,

As part of an protracted trip, our family of six (children 2, 4, 10 & 11 years) will be spending up to 3 weeks in the Philippines. We've done some research on Thorn Tree and, so far as child-friendly resorts go, Coral Cay (amongst others) seem likely options. But little mention is made of the cost or quality of food - pre-prepared or not - at these resorts. Can anyone fill us in? Any recommendations for resorts or other accommodation on the islands around Cebu? We're of course on a a budget, and would like to stay below 3000 pesos p/n for accomm.

Cheers.

I am not sure about the specific resorts, but we found the food in Philippines quite bland and very American. We wanted to eat "local" food (which we guess to be more Asian), but it was very hard to get. In the cities there are lots of fast food places and even local eating places serve mostly American-style dishes (lots of fried chicken!).

Hi Api,
Yes. I was in Manila about 25 years ago for a week, and can recall only revolting food being commonly available. Real let down. Seemed to be a lot of unfortunate looking/tasting stew-like dishes ...Certainly was no 'Malaysia', in the culinary sense.

Hi. There are some great Filipino dishes such as kanilaw, crispy pata, pochero, kalderita and escabitche. Of course, finding resorts and hotels which serve those dishes prepared to a high standard is not so easy but you will certainly find them in Cebu, Bohol and Southern Leyte. Fried bananas and letchon from street vendors may not be exactly haute cuisine, but they are certainly delicious.
