We're planning to be in New Zealand at the end of the year with a 4 year old and 18 month old. Cannot decide whether to travel by campervan or car. We will be there for 3 months and orginally thought a campervan but after reading comments on the other branch where people are saying campervans are very costly to rent and obviously eat up fuel. It feels like buying a van for 3 months could be a real hassle especially selling when you've got a time limit to go. The other option is an roomy car with camping equipment and to use the cabins on the holiday parks which people have said are good value. Do they have family rooms? How much would be the average cost for the 4 of us? Would be interested to know what peoples experiences have been.

we travelled in NZ with our 2 year old girl, two years ago. We hired a car and usually staied in cabins on campgrounds. Most of the cabins only have one double bed, but there's enough place to put a mattres at the bottom for the kids.

We hired a car including a baby-seat for about 30 NZ$ a day.
You can also buy a baby-cot in NZ for about 100 NZ$.

It was very easy to travell and we never had a problem to find a cabin on all campgrounds. Always there's a playground for the kids attached and you can prepare your own food.

A car is much handier to use, as soon as your doing some trips, because you don't have to put all your stuff together as soon as you need a car/campervan.

enjoi your trip
