We're going to Ireland this spring. Our 14 year old loves traditional Irish music, so we'd like to hear some while we're in Dublin or Kilkenny. I would assume that a pub would be the most likely place, but I've read that many pubs don't allow children in the evenings. Any idea where we should go?

Firstly do not go anywhere that is aimed at tourists, that is not a proper trad music session. This is the law in relation to children on the premises:
Unaccompanied children aged 15 to 17 and accompanied children under 15 may remain in the bar of a licensed premises between the hours of 10:30am (12:30pm on a Sunday) and 9:00pm.

From 1 May to 30 September each year the until time changes to 10:00pm.

However, unaccompanied children aged from 15 to 17 and accompanied children under 15 may stay in the bar of the premises after 9:00pm (and after 10:00pm during the period from 1 May to 30 September each year) if they are attending a private function at which a substantial meal is served.

The only place that I would recommend in Dublin for trad music is The Cobblestone, a proper place not a honeytrap for tourists. I have no idea about Kilkenny.

H there
If you haven't already left for Ireland I would strongly recommend a tiny village in Waterford called ballyduff. They have a great tradition for Irish music and dancing with all classes being held in the pub on thursdyas and friday evenings. Just watching the classes is probably one of the best trad nights you'll see
Let me know if you nt more info
