Read this article with interest as it takes 5 kids off on 'learning' holidays... something that I'm keen to try with mine. Let me know your thoughts.

I read this in the paper. I think I thought they're all so expensive, surely you could organise that kind of thing yourself with a bit of effort. And make it a family event rather than sending your kid off. Sounded a bit like summer camp for rich kids to me. Bit I am a bit of a minimalist camper.

I love the idea. And I agree with peskyrat - you can easily do this yourself.
My son (then aged 13) & I got our diver's certification on the Great barrier reef in Cairns, Aus on our RTW trip. Then my daughter (then aged 10) did an intro scuba course and we went diving together in Bali about a month later. My youngest daughter (then aged 8) still had tons of fun snorkelling with my wife.
As complete novices, we also went climbing with a guide in Thailand for a couple of days - three years later, we've bought all our own gear and climb regularly indoors and out. My oldest has hopes of making the National Youth Climbing Team this summer.
Since we were there on vacation as a family already, it was relatively inexpensive to do the extra activities. It was very easy to arrange, plus we got to see the facilities and meet the instructor in advance so we were comfortable that we were doing the right thing.
Bottom line is, if you pick your family vacation spot well, you can find something for everyone.

Isn't that the hard part though? Finding a place that would suit everyone. We have a 6-& a 3-yr old - where would I take them that would suit them both AND two adults? We've tried beaches and we live next to Disneyland - where else is there to go and do w/out them being bored and endlessly tired? We basically can't wait until they grow up so we can have some adventures - the youngest one in that article is 8 yrs old i think.
