Hi, here is my story.
We'v got 4 kids and from 1993 to 2000, I spent seven dry seasons in South-east Asia with them.
I was working in Thailand but the family was home. We never really discussed it and we felt it was quite normal that I took my first daughter along back to Thailand when she was 2-year old. We didn't realise it at the time but for me, that was the beginning of 7 long and eventful years of travels with the kids.
We basically always did the same trip: 2 months in koh Chang, 1-month visa extention in Laem ngop, then out of Thailand for a few weeks for a visa run anywhere we chose, then back in Koh Chang for another 2 months. We usually left bangkok after Songkran.
Things that happended to the kids and me just because people realised there was no mother around are just unbelievable!
I would like to discuss/share with other fathers who traveled solo with kid(s) not forcibly in South-east Asia.
And maybe also give a piece of advice to all dads who might not dare taking that steps.
And the moms too!

Hi there,
Im a single mother planning to go on an extended low budget trip through asia with my son before he enters kindergarden. He will be 3 or 4 then. Im actually curious whether you needed a letter of consent or anything from the other parent when you were travelling in asia. I have full custody, but no idea how i would proof that to a thai border official...
I have fairly extensive world travel experience but none with children outside the typical North American tourist spots.
That said, I am a single father who will be embarking on a round the world, 12 month trip with my 13 year old daughter in 2014. This will be 100% overland. No flying,
I'd be very interested to hear any advice and tips you might have..
sytt, make sure you have a notarized letter granting permission to travel from the child's father OR ensure you have your custody order with you. And th order is only good if you have sole custody. Joint custody, even when the child lives 100% with you, will still require permission from the other parent to travel internationally.
Parents who lose custody often kidnap their kids and flee their home country and border agents everywhere are taught to look for this. Proof of custody and permission for the child to travel with only 1 parents is highly recommended.
