We have 2 kids (12 and 15) and are in the process of planning our first overseas holiday.
With a budget of about Australian $5,000 (including airfares) we're thinking of travelling from Australia overseas for a week or two in July.
Would anyone be able to recommend a place to go? Asia would probably be best, maybe Bali?

Bali would be great for a couple weeks...lots to do. Maybe spend a few days relaxing in Sanur and then head out to explore the island. We rented a car and it worked out well for us. You can also get a car and driver reasonably. Pick up a guide book and start charting out some destinations. There is great snorkeling, stunning rice paddies, whitewater rafting, not-to-be-missed dance performances nightly in Ubud, and lovely people. I'm sure you'll love it, especially if you get out of the high traffic areas (like Kuta!)

Yes, Bali is a great place to spend your holiday but if you would like to try a semi home stay program, you can try it in Kuala Lumpur.

First you must identified what do you want for your holiday, then you can choose the right choice. Your budget should give you a good holiday if you can identify your needs first.

Answer this questions before you choose your destination.

a) Are you looking for beaches? Is it a must for you to stay at the beach for the whole of your holiday? or just part of your holiday?

b) Are your family hoping to play a game of golf or two during your holiday?

c) Are you looking for 5 star hotel as your accommodation or you are ok with clean and nice place with swimming pool and tennis court to stay.

d) would you feel more comfortable if you stayed in a 3- bedroom apartment with facilities where your next door neighbor is a local resident or you preferred a hotel room whereby your next door neighbor is another tourist like you?

e) Are your kids looking forward to some great fun in the sun like theme park where they can swim and have fun rides, some jungle trekking where they can go for canopy walk on trees, some fireflies watching at night on a boat, bathing at the waterfall surrounded by beautiful rain forest, visit fishing village on a ferry and have seafood for lunch , some shopping activities for your whole family at night in China Town and shopping complexes?

f) would you preferred to have a tour guide as your chauffeur to meet you at the arrival hall( airport) and show you around for 10 hours a day (in a Nissan Serena MPV for sightseeing or theme park or shopping or dinning or any place you like to go) while you are at the destination of your choice? and send you to the airport at the end of your holiday?

g)Do you like flowers? such as orchird and hibiscus. Do you like butterflies and birds? Would you feel great to see these plants and creatures on your holiday?

h) How about the food? Are you flexible with food?

i) Do you like seafood?

j) what is the health status of your family, any physical restraint in activities? You mentioned about the kids' age, but what about the kids' parents age?

k) if your answer to question (a) is just part of the holiday, your food is flexible, you like seafood and yes to all other questions, then you can consider this as your last question, are you willing to have all the above for approximately USD60 per person per day for everything, lodging with tea making facilities, 3 meals a day, transportation for 10 hours a day with a tour guide, tickets to all the places of interest, have your own flexible timing to move around places you like?

or USD34 per person per day for lodging with breakfast and tea making facilities ,10 hours transportation with tour guide to places you like?

l) if your answer is yes, I have a suggestion for you.

www.sheqtravel.com is highly recommended. Runned by a nice Christian family in KL.

Good luck!
