We're confused Brits who have a family of 2 adults a 14 yo boy, and 11 yo girl and a 2 yo girl and we're trying to get acom in LA and San Francisco. We're v. confused about how the rooms work. Do we need to get one room and the hotel will make beds up for the kids - the teenagers obviously don't want to share a double bed -or do we need to get 2 separate rooms 1 for us and 1 for the teenagers? Will they be allowed to have a twin room of their own? We'd ideally like a large room with a double and 2 singles, a cot and an ensuite but it seems that these don't exist. Any suggestions enlightenment out there please?

This is done on hotel by hotel basis. Yes they could have their own room. Often we get connecting rooms, which also has the advantage of allowing the adults to have some privacy, and not need to go to bed at the same time as the kids, while also allowing complete access to stop them from spending the night watching TV or jumping on the beds. Some hotels do have family rooms, but (in my experience) these are often old hotels and especially old resort hotels. This is not necessarily bad- some of them are quite wonderful. Some hotels will provide (often at extra cost) cots, but some say, truthfully or not I don't know, that only so many people can be in a room. Generally you would have to contact the hotel and ask them directly if they have any family rooms.

Do an online google search for hotel suites in the areas you will be staying - where will you be in LA (it's a huge area). There are a lot of hotels that have suites - and, as #1 says, with separate rooms that are connected. Many will have kitchenettes and living room areas, which is a great way to save some money and have a space to relax a bit. We've stayed in suites quite often and like them a lot - it's great to have a fridge in the room for snacks, etc.

Staybridge Suites, Hawthorne Suites, Homewood Suites, Residence Inn are a few US chain suite hotels. You can get 1 and 2 bedroom units and they are great for a family. Or you could just get two hotel rooms. We often get a separate room for our teenage son.

Contact Orchid suites or look at their website in LA - their double beds are so huge your 2 year old could easily sleep with you. |They are reasonably priced and in a fantastic location. We stayed their last August.

Often you can reserve a room with two double beds and pay about 15$ extra for a rollaway. I spent 7 years working in hotels in the US and also have travelled with my own kids (two girls and a boy) and this is frequently an option. Just call the hotel and ask if you can reserve a rollaway. You shouldn't have to pay for an extra person, but may have to pay for the extra bed.
