Europe with an allergic one year old

Interest forums / Kids To Go

My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe in April/May with our son who will be one. We only have 5 weeks and wish to spend the bulk of our time discovering Italy, whilst also seeing Austria, Switzerland and some of the Czech republic particularly Prague. We'd also like to head over to Paris to catch up with a friend for a couple of days. we are on a very tight budget and would usually be more than happy to rough it and stay in hostel accomodation but our baby is allergic to dustmites(among other things) and breaks out in severe excema. For this reason we would have to be picky about our standard of accom. and are therefore considering hiring a campervan. These don't seem cheap to me and I have heard that there are also some huge tolls to pay. On top of this I gather we would have to stay at campsites and probably use public transport to get into cities. has anyone done this before who could give me an indication of other costs involved? Is there somewhere that I can find prices for tolls? Any ideas for itineries?/what to see? Or is there a better idea to suit our babys needs. We would be happy to hire a car or even travel by train if we could be assured of our accom. I would love any advice about travelling with a one year old?
Thankyou

for an idea of the cost of the tolls you can visit this site and planing your itinerary

for visit paris it is better to forget car and campervan and take public transport

just a note for traveling in france. just going from the italian border to paris, its probably worth it to spend 65 euros to buy the infant plus card which gives you up to half off for up to 5 people traveling with a baby. unless of course you have some kind of rail pass. if you do get the infant card, you save more the earlier you buy the tickets, but you always get at least 25 percent off.

also, as far as france and switzerland are concerned, my wife and i have found most of the info in the lp guide books to be accurate as far as cleanliness for a baby goes. we have an 8 month old ourselves. if the book says a place is dirty, stay away but if it doesnt then i dont think there is any reason to be worried. you can always ask to see the room first before you pay for it. or you could bring your own sheets.

one note of caution though. it is NOT usually in the guide books if hostels allow children or not. strange because my wife and i both recall hostels having special "family" rooms when we traveled with our parents in europe. it seems that many hostels are not really "youth" hostels anymore, but more for party mad college kids. dont get me wrong, i love a good pub crawl every now and then, but things have changed a bit since we traveled with our parents. check with the individual hostels to see if they allow children or not. good luck and have fun!

My son has chronic excema and yes he too is allergic to dustmites...when we travel I take his own sleeping bag and pillow and you would be amazed at the places I have aired it out for the next night.

Enjoy your trip
