We are planning spend 10ish days touring Egypt with our 8 and 10 yr old's then travelling overland to Turkey and on from there.

I have heard the nile river tour is good but is it also suitable for kids?

Also does anyone have suggestion on the least stressful way to travel from Cairo to Turkey? I'm not really keen on tours and would like to keep the cost down by avoiding flying - but there are a few borders to go through.

Has anyone done this recently and have any suggestions - a ferry would have been great but there is no such beast now.

Thanks from New Zealand

Isn't there still a ferry from Sharm to Jordan? Also I believe a ferry leaves from somewhere, maybe Hurghada, and then goes up the Gulf of Aqaba. This would be easier than going thru Israel. The Cairo-Tel Aviv bus is an all day thing, expensive, and then you're in Israel, the most expensive country in the region. (altho that beach in Tel Aviv would be great for the kids). (BTW, there is a ferry to Cyprus/Greece from Israel, but it's rather expensive) Jordan is a good place for kids to visit; you can do Petra, Gerash, and other ruins easily. You need to get a Syrian visa, then visit Syria where they love kids! The kids will love that Crak de Chevaliers.... To get to Turkey, go to Aleppo, then bus it across the border to Antakya, Turkey, a nice little ancient town. From Antakya you'll have to bus it to Adana, where you can catch overnight trains up to Ankara and then on to Istanbul. The overnight trains in Turkey are very reasonable. I'd avoid taking kids on the 38 hour bus rides.....

Overland is impossible since Syrians would not let anyone with Israeli stamps in. The only option which does not include flying seems to be a ferry to Aqaba (Jordan) and then via Syria to Turkey.

There is quite a fast ferry from somewhere around Dahab (a very nice and coyz place) or Sharm(Egypt) - i can`t remember where exactly to Aqaba(Jordan), so you can avoid the passport problem.

Thanks heaps for your information

We have found some info on Syria and Jordan and they sound great - only prob is Syria has a security alert right now. We aren't going until next year though so may have cooled down.
