We are planning to take two weeks holiday in Croatia this summer with our two kids 4 and 2 years old. We were hoping to visit Split and Dubrovnik and the coast in between, also some of the islands. I was wondering if we needed to hire a car. I heard the driving is terrible there and the roads quite scary. The ferry services between all these destinations look quite good, could we survive with them and taxis. With kids it's hard to travel light and they can't walk far so i'm afraid that we will end up getting stuck in ports and having sore backs from hauling baggage around, but i don't really see the advantage to having a car.

Does anybody already tried this?

Also do you think we will have to pay for both children. In most places over two counts as a child but the youngest doesn't even sleep in a bed and the oldest can sleep with us or on the floor as well.

Thanks for any help.

We rented a car and drove around Croatia during June with our 11 month old. We had no problems and found the car a great way to get around. We found the roads to be fine, as long as you don't mind no guard rails at the edges of cliffs. However, someone else on this board said that the summer has heavy traffic. Do a search to find the post.

The ferries drop you off in pretty central locations so it wouldn't be very difficult to rely soley on this mode of transit.

Goldfinger - We are planning a two week holiday in Croatia this June with our 11 month old daughter. We live in Switzerland so are considering driving to Italy and taking the fery - otherwise we will fly and rent upon arrival. Would love any recommendations that you have on places to visit and accomodations in particular. Did you book accomodations in advance or find something upon arrival? Any input or comments you have from your holiday would be well appreciated!
