Hi
My partner and I are off RTW soon with our 15 mnth old.
We will be travelling from Australia to England/Europe and the US.
As we will be hiring/using cars during our trip, we are wondering if its worth while taking
our own car seat with us. This would seem a lot cheaper option than hiring from car rental places.

Does anyone know, if we take our own seat, are the anchor points located in the same places in the vehicles
(on the rear parcel shelf in Australia) in different countries. Are the anchoring parts on the car and the car seat
the same as used in Australia?

Thanks
Jarrad

HI,

In the US, the tether anchor is in the same location (rear parcel shelf) - and it will be in all rental cars, as all cars made after 2002 are required by law to have them - and many older cars have them too. And if you don't find the anchor in Europe, most car seats CAN be used without the tether, although it really helps. Another option would be to use your seat rear-facing, if it is designed for that. Most US "convertible" seat accomodate kids to 30 or 35 lbs rear-facing.

I fI remeber correctly in the UK you should be able to use the back ancor points. On the contenent child seats are different and have different standards to which they comply, however, as Heidi says you should be able to adapt the way you strap the seat in, even if you just use the seat belts. (Maybe not ideal but may still be safer than what certain countries have anyway).

In the UK, the rear anchor points for the 3-point belts are usually on the rear support struts, immediately behind the window; most cars have a lap belt for the centre rear seat, and you may find that your best option. Newer (2003+) cars may have a 3 point belt in the centre rear, however.
