My husbans and I are fairly seasoned travellers and want our kids to experience getting out of the comfort zone safely. We have thought of taking them to Vietnam from Australia however reports of bird flu have just started reappearing- this makes me a little nervous. We need to look at a bit of work ( like hiking, rafting etc ) and some kid fun inbetween. We will only have 2 and ahalf weeks to give them a taste. We have been to India - just wondering if any one has taken kids recently. I guess I am looking for all sorts of possibilities in the Asian area. Sri Lanka is out a it will be wet and not much fun at the beach. If any one out there has had a fantastic holiday with their kids outside Oz recently I am open to suggestions. Thanks!

Just got back from Vietnam and Cambodia with our three ages 10, 13 and 15. My understanding with the avian flu is just to stay away from poultry in open markets which is not at all difficult. We found Vietnam super easy to travel around in with a ton to see and do for kids that age. Trekking in Sapa and the boat in Halong bay were highlights for us, as well as taking a boat up the Mekong. Cambodia is a real eye opener for kids of that age. The poverty and abundance of land mine victims were shocking but overall it was a very good experience for the kids just to see what the world can be like. Angkor Wat is simply not to be missed and the accommodations and meals in that area are fabulous. We have also been to Bali which is a very gentle experience with the developing world and a different culture which our kids also loved, but missing the real excitement of the other areas. The beaches in Thailand are also good but again, not so exciting. Plus coming from Australia, are the beaches that big a deal to you?

Totally agree with #1. We also enjoy travelling through SE Asia with our two teenage children. In a weeks time we are returning back to nothern Vietnam for 4 weeks, but will not be visiting any poultry farms. If you wish to ask any questions please send a private message.

We are leaving fro Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam at the end of Feb. WIll be travelling with a 13 and 15 year old. Sounds fairly easy to do. Question though, when the books say visas or exit fees are USD does that mean currency only or do they take credit cards or travellers checks?
