Most people don't seem to rate the Lonely Planet book, but I'd like to get one for my girlfriend for Christmas. Any other suggestions?

One Year Off is the best account I have read as well.
35,000 Miles in the Nick of Time was awful!
There are some good round the world on a yacht travel books, but that may not be your area of interest.

Let's Go gets some harsh criticism at times, but I've always found it accurate and reliable. It gives a lot more information and some find it to be too "hand-holding" but if you are travelling with kids that kind of information can help you to be more prepared. Eg., gives info on which hotels have dark hallways, or noisy neighbors. As a single woman traveller, and later as a mother travelling with kids, I valued that information.
