Hi, We're flying to Bali late July with the intention of going to Lombok and the Gilis and basically wandering, chilling and having fun for 3 weeks. Our family is myself, my hubby and our 3 girls aged 12, 4 and the youngest will be 20 months when we go. We'll be on a very tight budget staying in homestays / guest houses. (we're not intending to book in advance)
Any tips, hints, must do's or must don't s? We tend to avoid touristy areas. x

We had a gorgeous time there. Have a look:

watch out for drink spiking on Trewagnan, couple Aussies just died there.

I don't think there are many non touristy places on those three islands but stay on beaches in the north of Bali and you will get reasonable accommodations. Or if you like snorkeling/diving go to Permuteran. Ubud is a wonderful place for kids with tons of activities. My kids actually learned to dive in Gili Air which is the quietest and smallest of all the airs. Get off the beaten track in Lombock and you might find some quiet, relaxing beaches.

Hi,
If you come to the north of Lombok, you could make a day trip in Senaru - Bayan with your family. You can see and hear a lot about local life and it's only soft trekking, so it should also be a good program for your children.
Best wishes
