Have used a number of different carriers over a number of years, four children, and many trips of several months each throughout SE Asia and the subcontinent. We're big fans of the Macpac child carriers. We have both the Vamoose and the Possum carry packs, and they've had a great deal of use - with a further 4 months forthcoming this year through Europe and the Middle East. We've used strollers, but they're just not as versatile as the child/carriers/packs. One positive point over the stroller is that, being in the backpack, your child is less accessible to the friendly - but perhaps less than hygienic - fondling of locals. Also, strollers can be a pain over cobbled or uneven footpaths/roads. There's ample storage space under the child capsule for nappies, wipes, spare clothes, etc. The rocking and swaying motion of the backpack seems to have a soothing effect on the child. The padding and strapping are excellent on the Macpac carriers, and balanced such that using it is comfortable. After a while, you actually forget you have someone on your back. The kids themselves love them. The new price can be off-putting, but because they're so durable I'd recommend keeping your eyes open for a tidy second-hand one off eBay. You can buy the sun-shade and strap-on neck-support/pillow separately.
