Hi all,

We are planning a road trip the first two weeks of May in Norway with a 2,5 years old and a 4 months old.
We have experience with camping with our oldest sun, when he was 2 years; we traveled before with a smaller baby, but stayed at one place; we did road trips before without children. However, we never did the combination :-)

So now we are thinking of using a camper van.
Anyone tips and tricks to travel with children in a camper van?

Cheers!

Hi,

My parents took me camping from the age of 6 months and continued taking myself and 2 sister for our entire childhood. It obviously worked out well. My sister even took her 2 year old for a 6 month camping trip around Australia.

Basically kids adjust.

Get your 2 year old excited about the trip. Explain to them what camping is and what will happen. Set the camper van up and get your 2 year old to play a bit inside allowing them to familiarise themselves.

As for the baby take familiar items like blankets, a porta cot they use regularly. Kids get anxious when they are in foreign environments and don't know what to expect.

Break the drive up if possible and include stops at playgrounds where you can eat. Have suitable activities on hand to pass to the 2 yr old when they get fidgety, and have music cd's of songs they know.

Happy travels

We have camped with our kids from 6mths old. If you are moving from pace to place, do allow for travel-free days. Depending on how far you're coming from, it might be an idea to a have a rest day right at the start, find a shop with some snacks, foods the kids like.
We enjoy going for walks after dinner, have the kids dressed for bed,pop them in the stroller and off we go. Most of the time they go off to sleep in the stroller. We'll leave them in it while we sit and relax, have a drink, look at the stars etc. Then transfer them to bed, when we are going to bed ourselves.
Ditto with the bedtime blanket/teddy as suggested before.
Don't have a rigid plan, so if you've had a bad night and everyone is tired..just take it easy the next days. Travel is about being together, having fun..not how far you get or how many tourist attractions you get to. Enjoy.
