Any great ideas for a semester of high school?

Hello to fellow parents sharing my conviction that travel is the best education! I am looking for an inspiration to help my recalcitrant almost-16 year old son over the hormonal and metabolic hump of teenage blues - in other words, give him the chance to take a semester off from high school (he is a year ahead, being in his junior year already) and do something exciting and meaningful for the rest of the school year from now until June 2012. We are former homeschoolers, so being away from school is no problem. His interests lie in the areas of all kinds of history and archaeology, computer science, law and politics, geology, marine biology and wildlife - so many avenues to pursue! I'd love to hear from other parents or students what kinds of low-budget programs and/or self-designed internships or mentoring opportunities might be out there.
