We're trying to figure out which islands to focus on for a six-week trip in July and August with our three children, aged 8, 5 and 2. It's hard to figure out what is possible with kids and what is out because it requires a day-long hike or similar.

We won't be giving our kids any vaccines and I don't think we'll want to take anti-malarial drugs, so that will restrict us.

Some time in Bali seems like a no-brainer. I've read about cruises of about a week from there on small boats to go to Komodo and such and those seem like a good option for us, minimizing travel hassles and the need to carry a lot of stuff.

When I read about Java (which I haven't done in depth) I see fewer things jumping out at me as similarly suitable for our group. I'm imagining more long bus rides and destinations where more stuff is unavailable to us because of the physical demands of the activity. But I could be off-base. There's so much to read just to choose which areas to focus on, and then so much more to read to get things booked. We feel less comfortable just turning up and winging it than we did for similar destinations before we had kids.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received. I'm particularly looking for ideas that will allow us to incorporate our transport into our activity, like river boat cruises or train journeys or something where you hire a driver to take you somewhere that you couldn't otherwise go -- that sort of thing, allowing us to avoid interminable bus trips and lots of waiting and carrying backpacks in the heat.

Note that my kids are generally up for a challenge, so walking is fine, but walking with all our luggage isn't. I'll be carrying the youngest one. Our budget is reasonably generous.

Thank you!
Sarah

Hi,
We recently took our twins (aged 6) to Java, and it was a wonderful experience. I have a trip report posted on here: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2299074&messageID=20710104#20710104

Some of the highlights for us:
Mount Bromo - about a 3hr taxi ride from Surabaya airport (Air Asia fly here) and an amazing experience. We stayed fairly close to the crater/volcano, and walked along a black volcanic plain to it. There were plenty of offers of horse rides, which our kids loved on the way back to the hotel. Climbing the crater was a highlight, and something your two older children would love.

Yogyakarta - amazing temple complexes of Borobudur, Prambanam and the volcano Mt Merapi. Our kids loved the temples, and taking bicycle rickshaw rides around the city to see its various sights (Sultan's Palace, etc). It was easy to arrange good quality transport (car/driver) to these places through our hotel. The Phoenix Hotel was fantastic, and had interconnecting rooms and a pool, and the best breakfasts of our whole trip!

We took a train to Jakarta which the kids enjoyed... a little luxurious, and barely cheaper than a flight, but a great experience for all of us. Jakarta was worth missing though - it took hours to get anywhere in the traffic, it really is as bad as they say!

Bali was great, very relaxing and great for the kids, although it paled in comparison to Mt Bromo, which the kids still talk about. I've heard Bandung is worth seeing, but we only had a few weeks so didn't make it there.

Java was a fabulous place to explore. With 6 weeks you'd probably have time to see a bit of Sumatra too. Air Asia's flights around Indonesia are very reasonable, especially if you get their sale prices!

Enjoy!

Do you know the fitfortravel website? It has some useful malaria maps that you might like to check out if you aren't taking anti-malarials. Only Bali and Java have a low risk for malaria, so you are fairly limited. Both have enough to keep busy over 6 weeks though - particularly with kids.

The last time I was in Indonesia was more than 20 years ago, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

But I second the ideas of going to Bali and Yogyakarta, and skipping Jakarta (or at least minimizing time there - you may end up flying in and out).

Do you mean 'no extra vaccines' or that your kids are totally unvaccinated?

it is selfish to take unvaccinated children to high-risk areas. (this is obviously not about malaria)

protection against diseases such as measles, mumps, polio etc relies on herd immunity. This protects the children who cannot have the jabs for medical reasons. In countries without a developed healthcare system, many children will not be vaccinated. You take yours along, they may be incubating one of these diseases. If they catch it, you use your travel insurance and off you go for proper treatment.

the locals don't have this option.

there's no smallpox now. It's wonderful.
