What's the secret ingredient? I tried to make fish and chips the other day and the batter came out crispy. But only for about like 5 seconds. I use plain flour, egg, salt and ice water. I tried using chilled soda water before but it didn't make make any difference.

So, WHAT????

I have a question for the whisk(e)y experts. Does anyone know why Chivas Regal is sometimes considered a Bourbon whiskey? I've thought that Bourbons were an American form of whiskey, originally from Bourbon County, Kentucky, and that they have to comply with certain production regulations (by US law). However, C.R. is a Scotch blended whisky. Thank you.

I haven't lived in London for 42 years. I haven't even visited since the last Pissup. I know nothing - I come from the Midi. But someone has to say something.

Sarah55 has had a brilliant idea. Everybody who wants to wander Borough Market during the day and maybe have a pre-drink drink can do so. Then she puts forward a pub (not south of the river where public transport is difficult) which is fairly central and slap on a tube line. She has already been to this venue a couple of months back for a…

They pretend to reduce wine from GBP 12 to 6 when it’s worth 4.

They ask smugly if I’ve brought my own bag to re-use when their packaging is beyond belief.

They cause crazy queues cos idiots in GBP 30,000 cars want to save a penny per litre.

They insist on putting my loose courgettes (zuchinnis) in a bag when I place them on the belt.

They kill off local communities.

They pay 90%+ of their staff a menial wage.

They cynically place chocolate bars next to tampons.

They pretend to be…

Cool weather has come to Lerdo, so I've made a couple of new cooking pages for my website.

I am delighted to welcome a new cook to my kitchen stories. Sra. Adriana Rosales is the mother of my English student, Neddy. And a damn good cook!

I have posted two visits to her kitchen. She and Neddy have made a list of about a dozen more dishes that are different from the 35 or so already on my website. Cookies are next (I hope).

Start here http://rollybrook.com/kitchen.htm#kitchen Be sure to…

While I was at an after school meeting tonight I left my son with instructions to get his dinner ready as he had to be out more or less as soon as I got back. He was to put the oven on, let it heat up, and put his chilli in there.

At 5.45 I got a phone call to say that the fire brigade was on its way.

In the oven were two naan bread that I forgot to dish up yesterday. They now look like the fossilised food I have seen at Pompeii. If you want to produce it yourself, heat naan bread at 250…

Getting ready to start the holiday baking this weekend, and am planning to add a couple new cookies from our newspaper's cookie contest winners and finalists, including this orange chocolate cookie. Mpls Star Tribune Cookie contest recipe and the lime cooler cookie that was a finalist.

Also will make walnut squares and chocolate cappuccino cinnamon chip cookies, as well as miniature cutout sugar cookies and a chocolate-covered-cherry cookie. Baked spiced pecans and a couple variations of…

Take your initial estimate, double that and add 20 percent.
It always takes more time and money than you think it should.
