"conspiratorial"....before the killer spelling bees attack...

Well I was thinking of roasting a few chickens on a spit over a fire, but that's more a barbeque than a picnic. I like the lobster idea, pulling them cold from the cooler and cracking with your bare hands. They were made for eating outdoors. Softshell clams, mussels, and butter of course, cold beer and soft rolls with the seafood, then some port for sitting by the fire on the riverbank.
That sounds eely good, DD.
I'll bring a couple of goats and some peanut sauce. After we've "tenderised" the goats we can have sate.

mmmmmmmmmm

I have this great dish for picnics, it is a cobb loaf with the top cut off and scooped out, and it is stuffed with layers of roasted pumpkin, and eggplant and fetta and goats cheese with herbs, olive tapenade and olive oil, the lid is then repaced and it is refridgerated with a brick on top to settle it all in overnight, and served in slices.

Surely there's going to be a fire? If there is, I'll bring some garlic, olive oil and tinfoil. We can roast the garlic and spread it on the chunks of warm olive and cheddar bread. Help to soak up the good Merlot in the case in the trunk of my car. (Temperature controlled, of course). When the fire gets low and it's starting to get dark, we can break out the extra large bag of "shmallows" and roast them over the dwindling embers, as everyone takes a turn in telling a funny, scary or "truth" story.

Brilliant! And then in harmonious reverie we could collectively break out into a rendition of.....
