Since we know it is a topic close to the hearts, and keyboards, of many here...

this link has the views of many, including this one:
Quote

I manage a wine merchant serving wine up to £150 a bottle. I drink stuff that's about £7 or £8, anything above that is just throwing money away. But if people want to throw it in my direction...

Would you be buying wine from him?

No.
But I hope that guests coming to visit me would buy wine from him.

here's a good one:
Quote

All my family choose on the shape of the bottle. A nicer shaped bottle is bound to have nice tasting wine inside and a boring, plain bottle something not so nice.

As a Chevalier du Vin I would agree with the comment in the OP.

I won't be buying this but would be delighted if it was bought for me!

I wouldn't be buying since the mark-up is mad.

I wouldn't buy from him.

At Dean&Deluca the other day we saw a bottle for 88,000 Taiwan dollars. That's about $2800 USD.

Classy like I am, I shriek "Is that a TYPO?!". The clerk, who speaks perfect English, laughs and says no, but she wouldn't pay that much, either.

I have a great guy I go to, I walk in and tell him how much I want to spend and what sort of event it is for, and he recommends something that fits. He has never ever pointed me in the wrong direction and he can come up with excellent selections for everything from $8-9 bottle right through to as much as you want to spend.
