Hello friends!

I'm off to Thailand and Bali then back to the States on China Airlines. I've searched online to no avail to find what meal pref is best. The only thing I could find was someone thinking that the Asian veg looked better than the Indian veg but appearance does not convince me. My options are: Western veg, Western vegan, Hindu Veg and Asian Veg. I'm going to be on that plane forever and would love to have something edible- preferably with fresh fruit and veggies. Any advice? Thank you!

I can't speak for China Air, but on Lufthansa the "Indian" meals are usually better than the "Asian" ones (in my opinion). I had teriyaki tofu with steamed carrots and broccoli for breakfast, lunch AND dinner between Vancouver and Milan. I don't recall the dessert. The Indian one came with brown rice, curried lentils and curried vegetables, with different ingredients/seasonings to go with the different meals. For dessert I recall having rice pudding (once) and melon balls (another time).

Another way to put it would be that nobody around me really cared when I got served my "Asian" vegetarian meal, but every time that Indian meal came out I got lots of snotty looks and someone ALWAYS asked the flight attendant why they couldn't have what I'm having.

You're making me want to go on a plane!

Although I'm not a vegetarian, I usually order veggie meals on lights because the meals tend to be tastier (that's a relative term when we are talking about airline food) On most airlines, the regular vegetarian meal is also vegan, so they don't have to prepare two meals. So you get pats of weird margarine and even weirder salad dressings. I find that by bringing my own cheese and adding it to the veg. meal. I can get something decent.

The best airline meal I've ever had was a "Hindu Meal" that I was given instead of the regular veggie meal I'd ordered.

Always Indian-as bad as it might be it will never have bits o' piggy in it a la Chinese food everywhere.

On flights to and from India the vegetarian option is the Hindu veg option. I can confirm it's good. But I did wonder what it could be in a 'western veg' meal that cannot be eaten by a Hindu vegetarian, or the other way around. No meat is no meat, no? The only thing I can think of is eggs, which I'm told many Hindus don't eat, but wouldn't it be easier then for an airline to give all vegetarians the Hindu option? Or vegetarians of all kinds the vegan option?

I think if they are offering an Asian Vegetarian or an Indian/Hindu Vegetarian, it is more a matter of preference. Neither contains anything particularly offensive: no meat, cheese, eggs, etc. However, lots of picky eaters (myself included) use vegetarianism to get their way when dining. I've personally witnessed elderly Indian people scream at flight attendants when I was served an "Indian" vegetarian meal and they were served the airlines meat-free choice- pasta in alfredo sauce (I was impressed the airline even had a meat-free option as one of the two lunch/dinner choices). The more options, the fewer disgruntled passengers...

Now the airlines just need to get the word about special meals out to old people.

I'll opt for Indian/Hindu vegetarian. They taste a lot better than the Asian or Western veg options.

I would prefer NOT to eat, vegetarian or otherwise, on ANY Chinese carriers. ICK!
