there were ripening figs on trees overhanging the street. Too bad they don't keep once they ripen.
Figs lend themselves well to preserving in syrup or as pickles.

Here too there are the first blackberries, unfortunately not loads though. And I just bought the first local grapes at the market: muscat. The new ones in the supermarkets are from Spain.

Yes it's similar here-very average year-I won't be back out.
What's newly in season where you are now?
This a difficult question in Britain at present, bjd.
I could list what ought to be in season - but the Met. Office declared this year's summer to be the wettest in 100 years.
Still, English Victoria plums and Scottish raspberries were very good last month.

Tony, if it makes you feel any better, quite a few things were later than usual this year here too, because of a particularly cold February, too warm March-April, then a lot of rain in May-June. And there are many reports that the French grape harvest will be up to 20% lower this year than usual.
Although they are year-round, I'm suddenly seeing sales on avocados. Probably because peak harvest season is winding down & it's time to move the crop. Or maybe because it's prime chile & tomato time and stores can set up displays of avocados, tomatoes, & chiles for guacamole. Small ones are US$1 each and larger ones are $1.25.
The California Avocado Commission has been running ads featuring avocado growers waxing about how they care about the crop. The tagline is "Hand Grown in California," which I think sounds weird. Apparently it's supposed to convey that most avocados are grown on small family farms, not on conglomerate-owned mega groves.
Fall artichokes are just starting. Got some good ones yesterday.
We pitch a fit when advocados go to $.78 each. I like the small ones better, they have better flavor.

I have to agree.
I think cantalope season may be over around here. I haven't seen the parking lot cantalope guy all week. Poo! I'll have to keep an eye out for artichokes. Ever since someone asked about grilling them I've been in the mood for grilled artichoke.

I appreciate your kind and empathetic intentions, bjd. But your post didn't make me feel better! :))
