I've got a 1990 Masi amarone that I want to open in a couple of weeks for a couple of friends who have just got married, so we've invited them to dinner.

I don't drink much amarone, so I wondered what foods went well with it - a google has thrown up a few matches but most sites are about matching wine with food - are there any classic pairings with amarone?

I had a look at Masi site and with Amarone they suggest :
red meat, game, quails or spicy/savoury cheeses (pecorino, gorgonzola...)

It's not one of my favourite wines (even if Masi is 50 km from here ;-)
I had it one week ago with a birds roast, it's too "hard" for me...

Tanks for that! Never through to look at Masi's site. I believe they change considerable once they get over ten years old, something about philosophers wine or somesuch, which is why I wasn't sure if it was stillt eh same pairings as when young.. Bought it a while ago for a special ocasion but never drank it.

Label just says Masi Amarone della valpolicella (doc) classico

the label is frilly design with cherubs and fruit around, there is a panel at the top with five red stars and 'vendemmia 1990'

That bottle should be worth about € 70.
Use baloon glasses (right temp of wine should be 18°)

SALUTE and CIN CIN!
:-D

Balloon glasses = Riedel pinot?

And same food matches as the younger amarones - game, cheese?

Yes, match always savoury food, game, roasts, cheeses...

balloon glass the bigger it is the better it is

I agree with Crissy -- serve up that amarone with duck, ostrich, or steak. Meats served with fruit-based reductions go great with amarone, since the wine has its own cherry notes.
