Nah mate.
Amateur's daft ego trip versus world renowned manufacturer's professional opinion.
Zero contest.

Is it worth it to point out that there is a significant difference between a sharpening steel and a honing steel?
Probably not.

In my experience the terms are used interchangeably. Certainly seems to be the case when you google them.
Sharpening steels generally are treated with grit - industrial diamonds, usually - and actually re-edge the blade. Honing steels usually just smooth out and de-bur the blade, retouching the existing edge.

"Honing steels usually just smooth out and de-bur the blade, retouching the existing edge."
And that's what most people use, over and over and over, the idea that one can actually reshape the edge into a finer more efficient cutting area using simple tools is foreign.
Most people want to cling to the way it's always been done, innovation, forward thinking and efficiency are derided as "Amateur's daft ego trip " or "ludicrous. It's hard work; it's a pain".
