Cheese (eg Kraft Cracker Barrel Old Cheddar 500g.... almost $10CAN... Wow!)

I found an ad for my usual everyday cheddar. It's a store brand, not Cracker Barrel, but is pretty similar. Half a pound (about 450 g) for US$2. That's on sale. I think it usually runs about $3.00 or $3.50.

Some online shopping comparison site had Cracker Barrel, 10 ounces (283 g) for US$6.59. That's about $11 a pound. So roughly half the price of yours.

I can buy a kilo block of everyday cheese here in NZ for the equivalent of $7-8 CAN.

At the current exchange rate, this is GBP12.64/Kg - exceptionally expensive for the crap Kraft produce.

Real cheese is only about GBP15/Kg - and I can buy superb mountain Gorganzola for GBP24/Kg.

What is really, really dear where you live that should not be?

First Cape wine is extortionate where I live: it is almost always on offer at the allegedly half price of GBP5. I wouldn't buy it at GBP1, except to cleanse the toilet bowl.

A translation would be appreciated - by the badger or others.

The badger thinks that "Slimcado" is a hilarious concept. Instead of an avoca-DO, it's an avoca-DON'T. One reviewer of the Slimcado called them the a-NO-cado. Another called them Slimca-don't

I was shocked to se avocados at $2 each yesterday. They were pretty large, but still... I guess there really is a current shortage.

Everything is expensive at the moment because of the recession caused by unregulated bankers.
Supermarkets in the UK ( especially the big low cost ones ) have never had it so good during the recession and last year reported record profits. So its clear that the high prices are not market driven but pure greed. They certainly havent passed on the savings on the record profits to the customer.
Right now, I have never seen the cost of living so high in my lifetime yet wages have stagnated or declined.
This has been happening all over the Western World for the last 35 years or so. The reasons are I believe, unelected, unregulated bankers doing exactly what they want with the economy, ie printing money out of thin air and loaning money when they have absolutely no reserve money to back it up. False interest rates and inflation resulting in no pay rises to the true cost of living. So in other words, banks and governments doctor the figures to benefit themselves and big business, while at the same time the true cost of living increases ( and profits of big business and banks rise ) but wages do not. Another trend in the Western world has been to ship local industry to the third world and a lot of the remaining big companies pay only minimum wage or not much more.
My advice is to grow your own vegetables as much as you can and the savings made could be spent at small local shops which sell much better quality local produce and benefits the community into the bargain.
Who would want to eat anything made by Kraft anyway ? Next time you buy Kraft cheese slices take a look at the ingredients. Its anything but cheese.

Last year we spent 6 weeks during the winter in Crete. Greece uses the euro just like France where we live so exact comparisons were easy. We think France is an expensive place but I was astounded by the prices in Crete. The only things cheaper than in France were bread, oranges and ouzo. Olive trees were everywhere yet the oil was more expensive than here. Everyday wine was more expensive. Overfishing has meant that local fish is virtually non-existent. The prices of vegetables... Well, I won't go on.

And yet I still read crappy newspaper articles about the "healthy Mediterranean diet" based on fish, olive oil, wine and fruit and vegetables.
