Does anyone actually use ground pork in their pork pies? Everyone I know uses ground beef, even though they still call it pork pie. The same thing with shepherds pie. I've never had one with ground lamb, it's always ground beef.

Is that just an Americanism?

In Britain traditional pork pies are definitely made with pork. Why would you make a pie with beef and call it a pork pie?

Melton Mowbray pork pies

Shepherd's pie should be lamb - the clue's in the name.

I dunno. Maybe it's a family thing? We use ground beef in any recipe that calls for ground meat.

I hope you don't make much Lebanese food.

An Americanism? I don't know any Americans who make pork pies. Pot pies, yes, but they are chicken, turkey, or beef.

"We use ground beef in any recipe that calls for ground meat."

There was an episode of "Roseanne" that used ground meat for ground beef, in a meat-loaf so definitely an Americanism, Eh.

from Favorite moments on Roseanne

"It was the episode when Becky and Mark move into their trailer.

They are all sitting outside eating.

Mark tells them how he saved money by buying ground "meat" instead of ground "beef"."

This is a pure manchism.

Does your family make cretons, Manch? Not with ground beef I hope.

Tourtière, the French-Canadian meat pie traditionally served after midnight mass can be made with ground pork or ground beef. Maybe your family makes it with ground beef but didn't know any English word for a meat pie other than pork pie.

(It's better with ground pork IMHO.)
