Around a year ago, I was moaning (making a signifant negative comment on my critical journey?) about the BBC's Olive food magazine.

I pointed out that it was patronising to receive a special subscriber-only cover.

At some point last year, I pointed out that LP's travel magazine, promoting itself as an armchair read, was awful - not least since I thought LP was all about travelling in person, not vicariously.

Today, I received a complimentary copy of the new LP travel magazine. I am delighted to note that armchair travel has been relegated and is now buried in the last quarter - pp. 110-115.

But - the sample copy states, on the cover, SPECIAL SUBSCRIBER'S COPY It is indeed in block on the cover.

I assume the apostrophe appears before the s to make it crystal clear that I am the one and only subscriber - even though I'm not a subscriber at all. Or maybe it's just to underline the value of each subscriber.

When will they ever learn?

P.S. The good news is that BBC Worldwide, which owns LP, made £1B last year; good news for fans of classical music (BBC Radio 3) and intelligent discourse (BBC Radio4) and interesting television (BBC4).

P.P.S. I looked up BBC/LP jobs today. I was less than enthralled to note that they state: Every career is a journey. This said, if it wasn't for every idiot being 'on a journey' I'd enjoy LP's example.

You say "I'm not a subscriber at all."

Then you must return that copy to Lonely Planet immediately, alerting them to the fact that you are not the SPECIAL SUBSCRIBER for whom that copy was intended; that you are not, in fact, a subscriber of any kind. Somewhere, there is a SPECIAL SUBSCRIBER waiting for his or her SPECIAL SUBSCRIBER'S COPY. The wait will be in vain if you knowingly retain that SPECIAL SUBSCRIBER'S COPY.

Is the magazine any good?

I've never known any bbc publication to be any good, they're mostly full of advertisements and reader offers.

Have you tried Wanderlust?

Humour appreciated, NA - but there isn't a subscriber awaiting their copy: they sent it to me because I'd previously asked for a review copy; they have just revamped the mag and want my opinion. Shucks.

Is the magazine any good? It's OK, lucapal - but I'd not take out a subscription. My hunch is that they're trying to reposition it in the travmag world - I'm not optimistic they'll succeed.

I've never known any bbc publication to be any good, they're mostly full of advertisements and reader offers I agree with you, Donkeystone, save that the BBC Knowledge mag is different.

Have you tried Wanderlust? I haven't, Nerina. More details, please.

Um, dunno what to say. I like the range of destinations it covers. My local library has copies so I try to go in and read each issue. I remember a recent one covered trips from the UK costing £250 or less. It included some intriguing places in Eastern Europe. I often end up making notes from the magazine, so I should probably stop being such a cheapskate and buy it.

You can flick through the current issue http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/magazine/</i>

Cancelled the subbie to LP magazine a few months ago as I would argue that it appeared to be moving upmarket, much in the same way as the LP guidebooks.

Wanderlust's a pretty good read, and a bit more down to earth too.
