every right
Richard, if you hide your profile we don;t know how long you've been here and how many posts you've made. Why would you want to hide that? like in real life, we judge people by the information we have about them. Given that you are unwilling to share this basic information we don;t have anything to go by that says you're trustworthy. Hence, if you post a slightly contentious question, we will think it more likely you're a troll
Your question wouldn't necessary cause offense but it's a topic that's been chewed to death by the media in general- and by now everybody should know that diet and lifestyle are what determine obesity levels.

I thought 90% of US citizens:
1. are war-mongering maniacs;
2. over ate;
3. believed on gawd;
4. did not have a passport;
5. were geo challenged;
6. make maniacs seem sane.
I suppose I'm wrong? It's just 89.9%?
Seriously: when I was in Canada I met lots of US cits. and assumed they were, like me, on holiday. But no - they were there cos the idea of living longer appealed.

I don't know, tony. Canada may be dull and cold but do you really think it's equivalent to suicide?

I saw this tired, unoriginal post when it was first placed and at that time, the profile of the OP was visible, but it gave no information that was worth reading (a lot like the post itself). I am surprised, then, at #10, where OP is confused at the cause of offense, when he begins this thread by describing millions of citizens as possessing a “…low (relative) level of human development…” And that is just the beginning of his problems.
Since I have bothered to post here, I will also mention that comments like the one found at #1 are also uncalled for.
I lost twenty pounds when I moved to Italy, kept it off the entire time I was there (even losing an extra ten when I went on a no-pizza, no-pasta diet for a few months) and promptly gained all the weight back when I moved back to Canada. I have a few theories:
1. WALKING. In Italy, I walked twenty blocks to work and twenty blocks back, every day. Here, walking twenty blocks in any direction would just get me to more houses. Suburban sprawl really is a killer.
2. Processed foods. I ate very few processed foods in Italy. I would walk out my door, cross the street and be at a daily market where I could pick up fresh produce, fresh breads, meats (I'm a vegetarian though), cheeses and bulk items like dried beans and nuts. Getting junk food would require a special trip to a supermarket.
3. Entertainment. We didn't have a TV or computer in our house. It was a big deal when I bought a radio! Getting together with friends usually meant walking somewhere, having a glass or two of wine, strolling around downtown to "see and be seen" and then walking home. Going out to a bar rarely meant getting totally shitfaced, but rather it meant dancing until 5:00 or 6:00 in the morning.
I'm looking forward to moving to Mexico in January... I'm hoping I'll lose a lot of the weight again.
