Around here (Northern California) wine is a big deal in the food sections. Profiles of wineries. Reviews of tasting rooms. Suggestions for wine tasting day trips. Results of competitions. Lists of the best of some varietal. Recipes that pair well with a particular wine or that use the wine. Profiles of winemakers. Reviews of fine restaurants are not complete without an assessment of the cellar.

I like listings of what's good at the farmer's markets now.

Yeah, i'm interested in what is said about wines, and the latest trends, and what they think about it and matching it with food, much more that what just is said about food, i find at times some of the guys who write about food do not live on the same gastronomic platet as i do.

Restaurant reviews if they are written in an interesting way - the chances are very slim that I'll actually ever consider visiting the restaurants they review.

Fairly simple but unusual recipes.

General cookery tips - things like herb/spice substitutions that work, shortcuts, etc.

Articles on food in general - e.g. (plucking ideas at random from the sky) the challenges of cooking on submarines, or the story of Chinese food in the Wild West.

I quite like chef profiles. I wouldn't buy the paper because of it but I would certainly consider trying a restaurant if the exec or head chef recently arrived from a restaurant I liked.

Special Interest/group/diet needs - I couldn't think of a way to word that but I would appreciate seeing semi regular features in a newspaper which, for instance, commented on suitability of a particular restaurant for events or big groups. Also if they are particularly knowledgeable about certain diet needs (gluten, vege, vegan etc).

Recipes I'm not so bothered about. The exception is perhaps a recipe that compliments either a review or, even, a chef profile. Not just a writer including their recipe of the week or something.

Perhaps reflecting my inability to cook anything without burning or overcooking it but I would love it if a newspaper included a semi regular section on basics. Eg how to cook a particular vegetable or meat. Or even what to look for when you buy it. Should asparagus be firm or floppy, what kind of green etc.

All of the above, but my least favorites in the list would be chef profiles and recipes. I read recipes to get ideas of different ingredient combinations I may not have considered, but I usually don't follow them verbatim.
