#16 are you referring to Cashasa? this is a Brazilian Cane Spirit, similar to white rum, but not quite the same. It is the key ingredient of a Caipirinha a fantastic drink with Cashasa, sugar syrup and crushed fresh limes. Yuuum!!!!

No, it was definitely this Martinique "agricultural rum", Guruwil.

I'm always up for some Brazilian can spirit though!

ha ha! brazilian porn wins again!

Well I've read the article as linked and see no mention of 'crushed sugar cane juice'.

Sugar cane juice is what you get after the cane is crushed-how can it then be crushed again-you make no sense.

In any case "Rum is a distilled beverage made from sugarcane byproducts such as molasses and sugarcane juice by a process of fermentation and distillation. ".

The Martinique product-widely acknowledged as a quality drink-is in no way unique.

Cachaça as mentioned is a poor cousin of Rum-altogether unremarkable.

A side note-Tongan rum-as produced on the island of Vava'u-is a harsh unforgiving drink.

I'd rather have a Pisco sour. Pisco is so much smoother than cachaca. Ever drink that stuff straight? Foul-tasting rocket fuel!!!

Where, pray tell, do you think the sugar cane juice comes from? Crushed Elderberries? You're still claiming you're right based on semantics, not anything to do with actual juice from crushed sugar cane.

I take it back- you're not some cross dressing man of the cloth, you're in politics!

Whatever. If you'll excuse me, I have a DVDA scence to perform on an hotel balcony overlooking Ipanema.

Yes, I'll hold my hand up. At $1 a bottle it would be rude not to....

As I've said here before, Pisco is nondescript. Peruvian rum from the lowlands is not half bad.

You can't really comapare rum, cachaca and pisco. Rum (rum) and cachaca (vodka) are made from sugar cane, while pisco is more like brandy, and made form grapes.

I'm not exactly sure where the difference is between rum and sugar cane vodka. My guess is it's in the ingredients - molasses used in production of rum while vodka is a pure destillation product. Rum may also be stored in wooden casks and aged.

Anyway, there are quite a few excellent drinks made on those spirits: cuba libre, daiquiri, mojito, caipirinha & caipiriosca, dawa, pisco sour.

Istanbull- it is nondescript, which is why it goes so well in Pisco sours!!! (that is the only way I'll drink the stuff, and my latino friends are always eager to serve it up!)
Tonieja- yes, it is a brandy. Meant to be drunk mixed. I would never mix a decent rum or tequila though. Drink those neat!

My all time favorite rum is Santa Teresa 1796 (solera) from Venezuela. Another great rum is Barbancourt from Haiti, especially the Special Reserve. Mount Gay is ok but I would never consider it high-end.

The best cigar?: Trinidad (Coloniales is my fav size). Best cigar ever IMO, but that's a matter of personal taste, no rules around that.
