| sncinspain21:54 UTC04 Oct 2007 | What are your opinions, yay or nay? Do they have any adverse affect on knives?
| |
| mancub00:04 UTC05 Oct 2007 | I don't like them simply because I don't think it's a good idea to have deliberately magnetised kitchen knives.
I automatically touch up a knife with the steel before using it. If the blade was magnetised particles of metal could cling to it and be transferred to the food.
My very simple wooden rack on the wall by the working surface is all that's needed. The strips of wood, about the thickness of a school ruler, cost a few pence many years ago and the rack has worked perfectly from day one.

| big_iain00:47 UTC05 Oct 2007 | Good call, also it just looks naff, even with steak knives. A good old wooden knife block is better.
For my part, as there is always steam going on in my kitchen I noticed years ago that the steam was helping dust and suchlike to collect on the blades. I got tired very quickly of having to clean the blades before every use. Now that I have fantastic Japanese steel Knives I reckon that the steam would help the blades to discolour quickly as well.

| anonimo02:19 UTC05 Oct 2007 | I haven't detected any probs with my magnetic knife holder. Also, when i steel a knife, I wipe it off before using it, if I remember to do so.
(Have you ever considered what the radiation from your computer screen is doing to your brain?)

Yes.

| tonya00103:25 UTC05 Oct 2007 | I like them: they keep the knives away from each other. Tho' I accept that the wooden block does the same job and has more aesthetic appeal. Still, I prefer the magnetic rack for its 'immediacy'
(Probably why all my clothes are on open racks and not in wardrobes. I asked a friend what she thought of my 'open' clothes system. She said it reminded her of an Oxfam shop).

| anonimo06:06 UTC05 Oct 2007 | Our clothes are on open racks, too, Tony. These Mexican houses generally don't come with closets.
(Food related: today I made a juicy apple pie. I peeled the apples with a paring knife that I selected from the collection on my magnetic knife rack.

But they do have "Wardrobes".
| 9 |
| drovers_dog06:15 UTC05 Oct 2007 | I've just cut up some fruit salad.
Will report back soon if it starts to come down with filing rust.
| 10 |
| arbon06:22 UTC05 Oct 2007 | I just unloaded 25 bails of hay, to make "Pretentious" Winter goat cheese.
| 11 |
| drovers_dog07:05 UTC05 Oct 2007 | Bales as well?
| 12 |
| tonya00107:14 UTC05 Oct 2007 | Hay, hay, hay!
| 13 |
| tonya00107:15 UTC05 Oct 2007 | Anon: I like the Mexican approach.
| 14 |
| arbon07:20 UTC05 Oct 2007 | No just Bails of hay
It is not cricket.
| 15 |
| tonya00107:49 UTC05 Oct 2007 | arbon: I just clicked on that link - and I forgive ye!
| 16 |
| anonimo18:05 UTC05 Oct 2007 | I've always thought that they were "bales of hay.
| 17 |
| cocodrilo20:31 UTC05 Oct 2007 | Nay.
| 18 |
| ducky210802:26 UTC06 Oct 2007 | I use a magnetic rack for the simple reason that I have a tiny kitchen and there's no room for a knife block.
I've not experienced any problems with magnetic knives.
| 19 |
| tonya00104:17 UTC06 Oct 2007 | "I've always thought that they were "bales of hay."
Now that ye mention it: I always thought they were balls.
| 20 |
| drovers_dog04:24 UTC06 Oct 2007 | The Poms might have the fair dinkum article but here in Tasmania we use our bales to build our own Strawhenge.
| 21 |
| cocodrilo05:53 UTC06 Oct 2007 | That's cool, Drovers! In Japan, people carry bales on their heads.
| 22 |
| asmallturnip15:29 UTC06 Oct 2007 | Magnetic holders are generally considered to be more sanitary and used far more often in professional kitchens than wooden ones.
Also, if you do not wipe down your blade after steeling it, you are likely ingesting steel filings anyway, whether or not you keep your knives on a magentic strip. They are persistant little buggers and stick to everything.
| 23 |
| linguistlady22:58 UTC07 Oct 2007 | Has anyone ever seen magnetic knife block?
| 24 |
| cardamom05:48 UTC08 Oct 2007 | #24-I custom built one of those-different configuration-over 15 years ago for the place I'm now in.
It uses Rare Earth Magnets is quite simple to make and elegant to use.
The magnets are placed in countersunk holes and a simple piece of veneeer is glued on top.
| 25 |
| idigroadtrips06:40 UTC09 Oct 2007 | Yay! Not had any ill effects on the knives.
| 26 |
| joolz209:08 UTC10 Oct 2007 | I like my magnetic knife holder as well. I have very little benchtop space in my kitchen, so if can save a few square inches by NOT having a knife block, so much the better.
| 27 |
| niner10:43 UTC10 Oct 2007 | I am stangely attracted to those Rare Earth Magnets, cardomom. Thanks for the link!
| 28 |
| cardamom10:54 UTC10 Oct 2007 | You're quite Welcome!
An imaginative person can do all kinds of things with those unique little items.
| 29 |
| vinnyd11:14 UTC10 Oct 2007 | Is there any harm in ingesting steel filings? Or do they just keep your blood nice and iron-rich?
| 30 |
| drovers_dog13:12 UTC10 Oct 2007 | I have this feeling that #28 went wide of the mark on #29.
| 31 |
| asmallturnip14:18 UTC10 Oct 2007 | If your not careful, you'll find yourself setting off metal detectors in your autumn years.
