MAGNETIC KNIFE HOLDERS

Interest forums / Get Stuffed

What are your opinions, yay or nay? Do they have any adverse affect on knives?

I don't like them simply because I don't think it's a good idea to have deliberately magnetised kitchen knives.

I automatically touch up a knife with the steel before using it. If the blade was magnetised particles of metal could cling to it and be transferred to the food.

My very simple wooden rack on the wall by the working surface is all that's needed. The strips of wood, about the thickness of a school ruler, cost a few pence many years ago and the rack has worked perfectly from day one.

Good call, also it just looks naff, even with steak knives. A good old wooden knife block is better.

For my part, as there is always steam going on in my kitchen I noticed years ago that the steam was helping dust and suchlike to collect on the blades. I got tired very quickly of having to clean the blades before every use. Now that I have fantastic Japanese steel Knives I reckon that the steam would help the blades to discolour quickly as well.

I haven't detected any probs with my magnetic knife holder. Also, when i steel a knife, I wipe it off before using it, if I remember to do so.

(Have you ever considered what the radiation from your computer screen is doing to your brain?)

No.

Yes.

I like them: they keep the knives away from each other. Tho' I accept that the wooden block does the same job and has more aesthetic appeal. Still, I prefer the magnetic rack for its 'immediacy'

(Probably why all my clothes are on open racks and not in wardrobes. I asked a friend what she thought of my 'open' clothes system. She said it reminded her of an Oxfam shop).

7

Our clothes are on open racks, too, Tony. These Mexican houses generally don't come with closets.

(Food related: today I made a juicy apple pie. I peeled the apples with a paring knife that I selected from the collection on my magnetic knife rack.

But they do have "Wardrobes".

9

I've just cut up some fruit salad.

Will report back soon if it starts to come down with filing rust.

10

I just unloaded 25 bails of hay, to make "Pretentious" Winter goat cheese.

11

Bales as well?

12

Hay, hay, hay!

13

Anon: I like the Mexican approach.

14

No just Bails of hay

It is not cricket.

15

arbon: I just clicked on that link - and I forgive ye!

16

I've always thought that they were "bales of hay.

17

Nay.

18

I use a magnetic rack for the simple reason that I have a tiny kitchen and there's no room for a knife block.

I've not experienced any problems with magnetic knives.

19

"I've always thought that they were "bales of hay."

Now that ye mention it: I always thought they were balls.

20

The Poms might have the fair dinkum article but here in Tasmania we use our bales to build our own Strawhenge.

21

That's cool, Drovers! In Japan, people carry bales on their heads.

22

Magnetic holders are generally considered to be more sanitary and used far more often in professional kitchens than wooden ones.

Also, if you do not wipe down your blade after steeling it, you are likely ingesting steel filings anyway, whether or not you keep your knives on a magentic strip. They are persistant little buggers and stick to everything.

23

Has anyone ever seen magnetic knife block?

24

#24-I custom built one of those-different configuration-over 15 years ago for the place I'm now in.

It uses Rare Earth Magnets is quite simple to make and elegant to use.

The magnets are placed in countersunk holes and a simple piece of veneeer is glued on top.

25

Yay! Not had any ill effects on the knives.

26

I like my magnetic knife holder as well. I have very little benchtop space in my kitchen, so if can save a few square inches by NOT having a knife block, so much the better.

27

I am stangely attracted to those Rare Earth Magnets, cardomom. Thanks for the link!

28

You're quite Welcome!

An imaginative person can do all kinds of things with those unique little items.

29

Is there any harm in ingesting steel filings? Or do they just keep your blood nice and iron-rich?

30

I have this feeling that #28 went wide of the mark on #29.

31

If your not careful, you'll find yourself setting off metal detectors in your autumn years.
