This prestigious prize has been recognised by many, most recently by Nobel laureate Tomas Tranströmer:

Being internationally recognised for my writing is a great honour. But being a writer is not all cottages and red wine. It is about anguish - and, sometimes, about getting a single sentence right.

The mods on LP have struck a fair balance, over the years, between leaving posts alone and censoring them. As a writer, I abhor censorship - but forums (and it's not fora), like those found on LP, do need moderating, in moderation.

I have suggested to tony0001 that, this year, he bestows the Mod of the Year Award on the mod who best describes Lonely Planet GS in a haiku.

The closing date for haikus from mods is 15 December 2011 - three (max.) per mod.

It must be an error in translating Tranströmer's remarks from Swedish, but there's a subjunctive missing:

I have suggested to tony0001 that...he bestows the...Award

should be

I have suggested to tony0001 that...he bestow the...Award

So do we all get a say on which Haiku we like best or is this all your show tony?

This is quite an honor!

If the mods are happy to PM me their haikus, I'll post them all hereon, sashac - and all who post on GSTT may vote.

(It remains tae be seen how much the mods rise tae a challenge; how much they value democracy; and how creative they really are - after all, deletion is a doddle but creativity is not.)

I'll try to keep an eye out. But a lot of people (myself included) find haikus rather difficult. If you don't get responses you might want to consider broadening it to general poems.

OK, sashac. The mods may submit a haiku, or a limerick, or a poem in any form they like -

free
verse
is
to be
encouraged!

This said, dreadful entries are not encouraged - for example (in addition to the immediately above):

I am a mod
This is my poem
It does not rhyme
Nor scan

wouldn't win any friends.

Hints 'n' tips for mods:

Try to encapsulate the very essence of GS - why would you want to moderate this branch more than any other?

Seek to convey the sheer thrill of being a mod - it's not the power, nor the taste of voyeurism; nor, again, the distaste of deletion; it is something positive, something that allows people to enjoy their posting experience, going forward

Think of your audience: foodies (I'm told) - why are they on GS? Again, be positive - don't say it because TV is shite; do say it's because we are active members of a vibrant community & c.

Don't focus on yourself - look outward, embrace the universe; think of doc brown and his taking haggis through time and space.

And, most importantly, dinnae delete any o' ma charming posts between now and when we drink ourselves silly, eat ourselves sick and embrace rampant capitalism - all in memory of that socialist who got nailed to a cross. Bless!

Oh - and good luck with your entries! If ye need further guidance, I am but a PM away.

P.S. I won't post what I'll do to the next person - for it will be deleted - who uses the term 'going forward' in my presence.

Tony xxx
