After reading the OP about the dearth of messages here, I must apologize, first, for posting a question that only applies to U.S. readers:

What is your opinion of Five Guys Burgers and Fries? How do they compare to In-N-Out?

I think Five Guys is fairly new to Chicago, or at least to my neighborhood, and I only tried them recently. I like their burgers and fries. I mentioned Five Guys to my brother, who lives in a Western state, and he says that Five Guys is reputed to be as good as In-N-Out. There's no In-N-Out here in Chicago, and there's no Five Guys where my brother is. Have any of you tried both?

No, the fries are soggy and greasy, which is the way I like them.

It's so hard to get decent fries here which is a good thing otherwise I'd be buying them.

Do they make crispy fries NA? I only like soggy ones if they are homemade and I'm nibbling on them while they are cooking.

I've sampled them in the Southern U.S. and they were very good.
On the other hand, they've now opened up in Canada and the one I've tried couldn't compare with their Southern counterparts.
Let's face it; they're a franchise so some will be worse than others!
One good thing though; they all offer vinegar with the fries; great for most Brits and Canadians.
I wonder how long it will be before they offer poutine??
I've never even heard of In-N-Out so I can't answer the OP's original question.

They're decent. Burgers are good for 4 or 5 bucks. Fries are good but way overpriced if you're eating by yourself. It was like 4 bucks for a small. The major drawback is the "experience" they force on you. You walk in the door and they all shout "One at the door!" etc. It's over the top and not worth the hassle factor. I've actually avoided going there because of it.

Manch - fortunately they don't do that at the 5-Guys around here. I think they are ok. I have never eaten at In and Out. I think my son-in-law has eaten at both, I will have to ask him.

The best thing about their burgers is that you can get some good toppings at no extra cost. The best thing about their fries is (at least in this area) you order a small but they put so many fries in the bag it is plenty for at least two people.

They are a pretty good value. I know much better burgers, but not for the price.

I agree. My microwave has a very good "defrost" setting, so I freeze the "second helping," then thaw and heat those fries the next time I bring home a burger (Five Guys is within walking distance).

I had my first 5 Guys burger this year, and have eaten there twice. Both times were WONDERFUL! Burgers are close to the best I've eaten, and the fries are done exactly the way I like them; with skins left on! Yum!

I've not yet been to In-and-Out.

I'm from the bay area and five guys just opened i think almost a year ago now. I've had their burgers a couple of times and they're not bad. You can order them "all the way" i think with everything on them. Standard burger with cheese or you can customize it with bbq sauce, grilled onions, mushrooms jalepenos or whatever. Sometimes i think too many choices messes me up so i usually go with recommended. The burger is pretty good for a fast food chain style burger. It's bigger than the burger at in and out and messier. The fries can come seasoned or regular and generally get a lil soggy if you like that. All in all its a good fast food burger.

In and out is also really good. It's usually my go to for a good fast food burger and it's a little cheaper than five guys. A double double meal costs about 6.50ish and at fie guys a meal runs about 9 something? At least in burlingame. The patties and the actual burger is a little smaller than five guys but they're just as good. The fries are smaller and crispier also. The thing about in and out is you can order stuff animal style, which is with grilled onions and sauce etc. or stuff off their secret menu. Do a google search and you'll see whats available.

They're both good burgers, but i i was forced to make a choice between the two id go with an in and out burger. Fortunately i do not so it really depends on if i want a messy monster burger or a dependable double double.
