I love to directly grill fish, not wrapped in foil.

If I do this over the grill on a standard 4 burner gas BBQ, am I forever more going to have a "fishy" smelling BBQ?

No, it won't stink up the grill after you clean it well if the fish sticks. Remember that not all fish grill well. Soft fish (sole, etc) tend to stick to the grill and make a mess. Firm fish (sword fish, etc) do much better.

Yes. But it'll eventually cook out with a hot fire.

what niner said - just burn it up when you are done, then scrape with metal brush

I have a bbq for fish and one for meat ;-)
To prevent fish sticking to the grill brush the fish with some olive oil (prepare a bowl of olivegarlicparsley) and moderate heath.
(or to prevent sticking here we use yellow flour)
