Something of an over rated comestible in my experience-the flavour is fine the texture OK but not in any way extraordinary.

"Durian is a strong blood cleanser..."

Oh Bee Ess!

I'm back with durian report.
Friends were (not) impressed with the smell. My gf who knew the fruit from Cambodia and Loas was the only courageous one who actually tried it (first time). Two friends didn't go beyond sniffing it and refused to eat it. Remaining two bits of the fruit were left overnight in the fridge, in a plastic box. The plastic box didn't give enough protection and the smell spread all over the fridge.
I ate another bit for breakfast today, and ... enjoyed it.

btw- the smell, although far from being that intensive, reminds me of Swedish sour herring. How come?

Chilled durians are nice, like eating cold custard with garlic:))
re: "the smell....Swedish sour herring",maybe the durians 'matured' and slightly fermented, like strong cottage cheese?

yeah, a new friend from USA wanted to try durian for the first time too. I advised him to eat the fruit outside his home and warned him about that lingering smell.

#12 - cold custard with garlic???? :S

I was able to get over the smell, but I found the texture revolting. "Custard" wasn't it. Gooey and thick and cloying was more like it.

"A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds" with the aroma of "rotting onions" was the description of the famous British naturalist and explorer Alfred Russel Wallace who incidentally admitted to be addicted to this odorous fruit.
Author Anthony Burgess, however, compared it to eating sweet raspberry "marange(?)" in a lavatory":))

Health benefit is not going to convince people to eat durian if they don't like the smell and I am one of those people. It is not medication and I am not sick.

5000KHR/ kg here for Thai durians, 10 000KHR for Kampot durians.

I stuff my face every evening.

Also in season are fruits like "rambutans",mangoesteens, and "chempudak"(a strong smelling aromatic/musky/pungent and honey like sweet type of "Jackfruit".
The "rambutans" which look and tastes somewhat like lichees and longans with red/orangey hairy skins are so sweet that they almost crystallize your teeth when you eat them.Definately a 'no no' for those with diabetes.

I love chempedak for its pungent aromatic smell and unusually sweet taste. If I want to recommend a fruit, this would be it.

My US friend tasted soursop for the first time and he thought it tasted "unusual" but "was quite good".
