I've had friends ask me to save dates for possible parties and I've gotten party invitations (by email/FB) rather early but a "pre-invitation" is another sign that the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

BTW - I like the way you asked about dinner parties to keep it food oriented.

Agreed :(

Am I ever out of it. I didn't know there are actual save-the-date cards, but several people at that linked thread mentioned them. I agree that the concept is just nuts; even an e-mail would be preferable, although I remember carefully writing out, in black ink, "NorthAmerican is honored to accept the kind invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gotrocks to attend the wedding of their daughter, Maureen, on the fourteenth of October."

The Gotrocks wedding, that was a fabulous event.

Bull shit.

If I absolutely want someone to be able to come I phone them well in advance. The rest get regular invitations a week before. That's dinner invitations.

That's what I do Henning. In fact I try to plan whatever it is around the people I really want to have there, as much as possible. My regular invitations are by email or phone though. I don't mail anything out unless I have to.

I've just emailed all on my dinner party invitation list to point out that if any of them expect me to turn up to their next dinner party to which I'm invited I expect, at the very least, the following:

Notification of an intention to issue an invitation.
A pre pre pre inviation.
A pre pre invitation
A pre invitation
An invitation
A post invitation reminder
A post post invitation reminder
A post post post invitation reminder.

After all of which, I reserve the right to decline, of course.
