What are the best brands of "supermarket" coffee in Canada. By supermarket I mean everyday ground coffee in cans etc. Not high end specialty brands. Is it the same as the US? Folgers, Maxwell House and Chock Full of Nuts?

Hi Manch!

Yup, pretty much the same... Folgers, Maxwell House, Edwards etc. Many of the big cross country supermarkets have their own brands too (Safeway has theirs, Superstore/Loblaw's has President's Choice and No Name (bleck!), Sobey's)

One coffee brand (and it's probably the best for pre-ground) is Nabob... I think this is a Canadian brand (?)

Have never heard of "Chock Full of Nuts"... Sounds kind of intriguing though! :)

Did Monique get you on some Canuck coffee thing? I thought she didn't like coffee? At any rate, I hope to God it wasn't Timmy Ho's!

Chock full of nuts? Surely that is a joke. I'd go Presidents Choice before any of those others mentioned.

If I'm not mistaken, Chock full o' Nuts (they don't spell out the "of") used to be strictly a New York regional brand; at least that's where I first saw it in 1960. The brand is probably distributed throughout the United States now, and the company is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

Here's a link to their Web site:

the only time I've ever seen Chock Full O' Nuts was on the Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. It was re-named Chock Full O' Guts.

I'm no coffee connoiseur so I just buy President's Choice No Name (foudn at Superstores's here in Vancouver).

Hey, I just got back from Montreal. Had a blast, but I didn't have internet access, so I just now got to see your recommendations. I ended up buying Vanhuite (sp?).......I think that was it. It's for a friend at work that loves coffee and drinks it in massive quanities, so by her own admission, buying expensive gourmet brands is a waste. I also bought her a case.......(yes, a case!) of ketchup, she says it's got a sweeter flavor than the US variety.

If you Google "Vanhuite" you get one of those "Did you mean...?" lines, and here's what comes up when you click on that:

Yes, that's the one. I noticed they have a US website, but I've never seen it sold in the US. Maybe it's just sold in certain US regions.
