I am waiting for a call from the nursery (I will ask about rootstock) but I think I'll choose this apple. It has been bred for English climate, is self fertile, resistant to disease, thin skinned (like some of us including me), tastes delicious and is red.
Baz, I'll ask about standards ....however I already know how to turn a 2 year bush into a standard (so long as the leading shoot has been left)....

Vinny - perhaps I could plant a shorter-growing bamboo in its large containers to try and suppress its growth, however this may not be worth the trouble especially if it starts to push down the retaining wall....

thanks for the help.

ask at the nursery about a non invasive bamboo as well, there are some around, i wouldn't even pot an invasive type, they can get away from you.....sounds silly but i lived in a backyard with bamboo and i've seen how fast and far it can sprout even when you try and control it

Skimmed above...KOB is clearly no match for 'Trax. Meanwhile....

For flavour and suitability to UK climate the choice is blindingly obvious:

Cox's Orange Pippin

Perfick....
