I'd like toget some opinions on what countries you think I should avoid when planning a RTW trip. Am I right to assume that, as an American, I should avoid anything that ends in "stan?"

What countries are the most dangerous? Are there countries that I can assume I'll probably get robbed because I stick out as a tourist?

Also, which should I avoid because theyre not worth going to?

Thanks!

Hi everybody. Possibly planning on taking a trip next year round the world with my partner for about 9/10 months. Thinking of taking in South America, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji/Tahiti, And some of Asia. Would €15000-20000 of a budget be enough? I know there is a big difference between 15000 and 20000 but just wondering what your thoughts would be?
Thanks in advance :) x

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this or whether it should be in a different branch so if so, please do let me know.

I'm taking a year out and heading round the world (well, some of it) for around 12 months at the end of next month. I fly on 31st May to Zambia, India, China, SE Asia, Australia, NZ, San Francisco. I've got a couple of queries about getting my Chinese and Vietnamese visa's as I'm not sure what the best plan of action is. (I've already got my Indian visa)

I land in…

Hi all,

I'm a quarter through my trip and bought some super glue today (for minor repairs for my flip flops) and this got me thinking of stuff I couldn't live without, so here's my (mostly obvious) advice;

Pack half the items you'll think you need.

But definitely pack a serong - it can be used for so many things.

Only bring travel towels and always ask for one at the hotel - no matter how much of a dump it is.

Buy a small bottle of shampoo and use as shower gel - its cheap and saves on…

Does anyone have an advice about what routes through Europe would be the cheapest and/or if there's anything on this route that shouldn't be missed. Time isn't really an object (within reason) but we'd just like to keep costs down where possible. We'd be free camping as much as we could but probably be staying in hostels occasionally.

(I wish there was a forum specifically for overlanding!)

Thanks

I haven't been around on Thorn Tree for a while but I notice the 'your choice' branch has gone! Anyone know why?

Hi

I'm heading off on a 12-month round-the-world trip in July 2013 and am going to keep a blog. I specifically want to focus on providing information about budgeting once I'm abroad (e.g. I'm going to try and give daily estimates for shoestring-budget for each area I travel to).

However, before I go I also want to share some of my experience in planning and booking the trip.

If you're planning your own trip, please check out this post - it gives some handy advice about flights, train travel…

Hello

i m negociating at the moment with my work to have a 6 month sabbatical .

i m bored to stay on the same road as tourist and want to see the inside of few non touristic countries (Iran - Pakistan for example ) . just want to take my camera and see what s happening . not sure if it s possible in some countries.
my plan is to ,instead of chilling 6 month on a south east asian beach (one of my option but already done it ), try to do a road trip.
so the goal will be to start from Istanbul…

....just wondering if anyone had ever used this site.... www.budgetyourtrip.com ?

What are your thoughts on how accurate it is? From my own research/experience it appears a little on the cheap side but interested on what others thought.

Thanks
