Is there any benefit in using a travel agent/consultant to purhase some of my international tickets? Some tickets I will need:

-New Zealand to Australia
-Australia to India
-India to Maldives (Roundtrip)
-India to Nepal (unless i can get there on land - safely!)
-Travel between Thailand/Cambodia/ Vietnam (again, unless I can travel by land)
-Rail passes (India, Trans-Siberian, Euro-Rail)

P.S. I have a 1 way ticket to New Zealand and will not be purchasing a RTW ticket.

If you know what you want and have access to the internet, then no, there is no real benefit to using a travel agent.

Presumably you have checked to see if you need a visa for any of the countries you plan to visit. Know to buy travel insurance. Know to check your home countries warning list (if travel is not advised, your insurance is not likely to cover you). Those are about all I can see a travel agent telling you about other than the cost of the tickets.

Thank You. Yes, I have all the visa info for the countries I am visiting. I've just heard that agents can sometimes get discounts/cheaper tickets than if I were to buy them myself.

Do you have any recommendations in regards to travel insurance? This is one important item I am not familiar with.

World Nomads is generally considered the travel insurance company by which others are measured. Just remember price is not the deciding factor when assessing insurance, coverage is. Compare apples to apples in other words.

We have used Airtreks on our trip around the world. They specialize in one way tickets, which has saved us some money along the way. We always compare and they tell us if it is cheaper to go on the net and buy it ourselves from the airline.

They can also help with insurance though I believe it is the same insurance as the previous posters.
