I posted this in gear thread but no response, I wonder if anyone can give advice here :)
I have read a couple of posts on this already, but still feel the need for assurance...otherwise I'll fret. :(

I'm going backpacking through mainly eastern europe for 4.5 months, leaving April returning August, and am wondering if a sleeping bag is necessary to take. I only have a 3-4 season one which seems too excessive, but am short on funds and wonder whether its worth it buying a thinner (smaller) one. I do have a silk liner I normally use with my s.bag. - Could I just use this and layer up if I get cold?
Places I'm visiting are Morocco (april) , Germany (may) , Austria, Croatia, Bosnia-H, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Netherlands and France. (June, July, August) Does anyone have experience going to these places and (a) not being allowed to use their s.bags or (b) free-yay- blankets or (c) having to pay for blanket?
I'll be staying in hostels/backpackers and won't be camping or trekking. But I'd rather have a s-bag and not pay an extra euro or whatever each night to hire, as that will add up. On the otherhand, if I can get away with using a silk bag and free blankets (or almost always free) i'd obviousl got with that.

Any advice would be lovely :)

I can't imagine a hostel in a cold country would not supply you with blankets, however, I suggest you ask this qeustion on the right branch which is the eastern europe one and maybe also the western europe one.

Off the cuff, i think you should be able to get away without one at all, since you don't plan to do any camping. That said, if you have one, you will never be caught short.

There comes a time, when you just have to make a decision and live with the consequences. Somethings you can never be sure if you are making the right decision until life happens. Don't worry about making the occasional wrong decision. Every body does make a few. Try to worry less. You will enjoy yourself more.

Many hostels will not allow the use of sleeping bags since they are one of the primary methods of transferring bed bugs. Forget about taking one. Take your silk sleep sheet if you wish. No hostel will not have blankest available in cold weather.

Your overall time span makes me wonder if you are aware of Schengen and the 90 in 180 day rule. You cannot legally spend more than 90 days in every 180 calendar days in all of the Schengen countries combined. Most of your list are now in Schengen.

Thanks for advice, decided not to take one.
Yes, i planned around schengen, and no, i will not let a reasonably healthy level of caution affect my enjoyment of the trip, otherwise i wouldn't be going.

Thanks
Rachel
