My wife and I are going leaving on a rtw next August/September, and we have been checking out flights periodically just to see where they are. We are doing buy as we go, and I just found a flight from St. Louis to Lima, Peru for $378/person including taxes and fees. This is WAY lower than anything I've found by a few hundred dollars. Does this seem like a good deal? Anyone else know any budget sites to check for flights to South America? Does connecting in Colombia make it cheaper, and if so, should we be worried about having to connect in Colombia?

My mind is spinning right now with excitement at the thought of actually booking our first flight. I am going back and forth between complete exhileration and excitement and feeling like I'm going to puke.

Is this a too good to pass up deal? Or should I just be patient?

I would,

Me and my girlfriend are heading off on our RTW in dec of next year and are starting off in south america as well, Flights from the US to peru are extremely expensive for the distance. A flight from any where in the us to peru costs a few hundred dollars more than our flight from south america to south africa! Anyway, This flight will most certinly not get any cheaper as time moves on so I would book.

Also I tend to use kayak.com to check flights, they have some really helpful search functions such as searching flights leaving one city and connecting to city in a region or country. Very helpfull when trying to save some bucks if your schedule isn't nailed down yet.

From Fort Lauderdale, Spirit flies to Lima for 300 or so, including taxes, one way, which is certainly the cheapest. You can go for around 400 almost anytime on spirit from any of their hubs - i.e., Washington, New York, etc. 378 sounds like a fairly standard good deal from St. Louis; I've seen cheaper, but not by much. Depending on the time of year, though, you can fly from most US cities to Quito/Bogota round trip for about 400!

Well at some point you're going to have to book your first flight, even if you do the rest pay-as-you-go. So if that looks like a good deal, snap it up.

We did the same recently - there was an airline sale on exactly the route we wanted to start our trip, so we booked it almost on impulse. It IS exciting getting the first flight booked.
