Fair enough.

Both of those are box-checking I guess for me,in a different way.

I try for something different...long enough to see some of the major sites (the ones that sound interesting, not the 'top 25' or whatever)....and long enough also to relax, sit and watch, meet people who live there or people that know the place better than me (which may well be other travellers) and try to get off the beaten track.....

That implies of course that you have a reasonably long time in a place, and that it is not 'fixed'...you can stay an extra 2 or 3 days,or a week,or even a month or more.Which you can't do on a cruise....

I did flight search with skyscanner.
I look some days in december 2013 and january 2014, because my trip trip takes place there. I do not know is that the reason for higher prices or what, but that is what I got with skyscanner.

And about this ´box-checking travelling´ and cruises you have talking about, I need to say that I have been also planning and dreaming those caribbean islands. Some day, I am going to do it, but definately not with any cruise. But still I think in future I have still limited time(if I do not win in lottery), so I need plan my trip then also.

And it seems that travelling with absolut freedom is the only right way for travelling. That sounds very weird. If you are planning to book just a few flights and maybe book accomodation beforehand you are not a real traveller. Need to understand, that people have different circumstances adn different situation in their lives, not everybody wants do like that way or do not even have possibility.

Both Skyscanner and Itasoftware show Helsinki -- Denpasar for 576€ with Malaysia Airlines in both December and January (2nd half of December is slightly more expensive at 774€ due to Christmas).

Look, I am going to be brutally honest with you. If, after reading all the posts and links in this thread, you still can't find anything better than ~1500€ for that flight, you do NOT have what it takes to do this on your own. I'm sorry.

Instead do what I said in post #20:

Contact AirTreks, Trailfinders, Travelnation and AroundTheWorldTickets.com (yes, all of them, type up your email, then send it to all four at the same time) with your desired itinerary and see what they can offer.

If that is too much effort for you, just go with your original suggestion for 3400€.

shadowlord

Don't take it personally...no-one was criticising you in particular. And no-one said someone who books everything in advance is ''not a real traveller'...just a different type of traveller.

Whatever happened to Easy Cruise? Sounds like your cup of tea Max. Cheap, mattress on floor, aimed at 20-40 year old budget market. I can't find a definitive answer as to whether it still exists or not. Stellios sold it years ago.

I tried to contact all that max_mexico mentioned post #32.

They only gave very rough estimations, because there is too much time still to 2014 and just tell to use some calculator at this point.

Airtrek estimation: 4500-5500$.

Travel nation estimate was £2350.

I have not got answer yet from everyone.

I just add to what was already said - for me not buying a RTW was cheaper and better solution. Flexibility is one thing. Money is your main concern. You found Auckland to SdC for something like Euro 1500 or more. It was two years ago when I was sitting first in Bali than in Sydney looking for three weeks for flights from Auckland to Santiago or Buenos. There was a great offer for USD 800, it lasted for three hours I was too stupid to decide fast. The normal price was USD 1300. Finally we flew Auckland- Sydney (45 minutes break) - Buenos for 1200 usd. The most expensive flight on all of our trip. Santiago will be more expensive but if for some stragen reason you have to go to Santiago you just take a bus from Buenos. Our route was different but we have spent around USD 2500 per person on all flight including the above (plus Hongkong-Tokio return, Bangkok-Dehli return, Bali-Sydney, Sao Paulo- Panama, Cancun - NY, NY - Frankfurt to show you how many flight we had).

If you want RTW than forget about Helsinki (just buy wizzair or something like this to Frankfurt or London) and be flexible with SA (not necessarily Santiago but include options like Buenos, Rio etc.). Still, cheap RTW does not usually include SA as from Australia they go to USA.
