Rabies Vaccination!?Interest forums / Gap Year & Round the World Travel
Hi! I'm going RTW as of the first of Feb and would really like some advice as to whether or not to have the Rabies vaccination?
I was recommended it for the month I'm spending in Cambodia and Vietnam, and the nurse said if I couldn't afford any other innoculations, that rabies should be my first priority. It buys you time and means you don't risk further infections through treatment as you've already had the innoculations. But that's how much I paid for it too, so I understand your dilemma! | 1
I've been travelling around the world for 20 months now, and the last shot I would get is a rabbies shot. I haven't met anyone who go one before leaving and I've met a lot of people travelling. Even for the month I spent in a baboon sanctuary in South Africa where we held baby baboons who were slobbering, peeing and defecating all over us...with the occasional nibble thrown in for good measure...we weren't told to get the shots and no one did. The key is not to approach strange animals as these may have rabies or, much more likely, fleas! That's a good enough reason to stay away from them. I don't see why people might think that you are more likely to be bit and contract rabies in India (where I now am for two months) than elsewhere. There are a lot of dogs, most of them strays, but it you don't approach them they won't bother you. Hope this helps. | 2
Get the vaccination. I have a friend who went on an innocent holiday to Bali - wasn't doing anything adventurous. He got bitten by a monkey and the shot saved his life. I myself am about to head on a 6 month RTW tour and have just finished my third injection for rabies. While expensive, it is worth every cent. We insure our home and car, our possessions without second thought, but spending money on ourselves, well that is something we try and cut corners on. Whether you get bitten or not - and remember sometimes these are completely unprovocated - you are better off in the knowledge you are protected. | 3
I was in India last year for 3 months and we stayed in all the places you mentioned. I got all the shots (including rabies) while my friend took homeopathic vaccines (tablets you take every few days). Both of us were fine and thankfully we didn't need the vaccines but I wouldn't chance not getting them. There are a lot of mangey dogs about in certain cities (I think Calcutta had the worst I'd seen!) and didn't Mumbai have a troup of marauding monkeys attacking people a few weeks ago? I think they sorted out the problem there but it's up to you essentially, I wouldn't take the chance personally. | 4
