I looking at doing a brief rtw trip in the New Year. I realise these timings are a bit rushed, but unfortunately the trip is being squeezed between two commitments. Just wandering whether I can fit the following within my budget, which after the £2000 saved for flights, insurance, innoculations and Australia and New Zealand bus passes (and having already bought all the equipment I need), leaves me about £3500 left for accommodation, food, internal transportation (less in Aus & NZ) and attractions. This works out on average as £25 per day.

The plan is:
LA: 7 days
Fiji: 12 days
NZ: 30 days
Aus (NSW): 38 days
Singapore - Malaysia - Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam: 42 days
Bali: 10 days

(4.5 mths in total)

I plan to stay in hostel dorms and eat fairly cheaply and have already got Aus / NZ coach passes, so will £3500 do this, or is it likely to be very tough? Any advice would be very helpful. I am particuarly interested in daily costs for LA / Fiji / Australia.

Thanks!

7 days is a long time for LA (okay, disclaimer: I'm an American and hate LA with a passion, but almost everyone non-American that I met traveling that had been to LA said that it is highly overrated and that a couple days was more than enough). I'd personally drop 4 days off of that and tack them onto New Zealand because a month will leave you craving more.

As far as Fiji, if you want "good" backpacker accomodation in the Yasawas or at Robinson Crusoe you'll pay around $80FJD a day for accomodation and food. I'd highly recommend doing some diving while there (if in the Yasawas stay a couple of days at Manta Ray Island Resort and do a couple of dives there with Reef Safari... even if you're not certified, do 2 "discovery" dives. The first will be on the beach but the second would be at a real dive site).

In New Zealand, you said you're going to be buying a bus pass... I did the "Stray Bus" (straytravel.com) and HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it. If you're planning on doing activities it's great too because they save you money with discounts on them. They also offer a lot of great meal options that are big money savers. I actually think my bus ticket probably almost broke even because of the savings. As far as budget, you'll pay around $20NZ for accomodation/night (dorm style) and food will depend on how much self-catering you're going to do/how expensive of food you want to eat. It's really all of the tempting activities that eat up the budget quick in NZ!!!

I can't speak to any of the other places... I've never been to them.

But have fun!

I would say 42 days for South east Asia is very quick. I would focus on either Singapore-Malyasia- Thialand or Loas-Vietnam- Cambodia with the time you are suggesting. we were just in SEA for 2.5 months and only traveled through Northan Thailand, Loas, Vietnam and Cambodia. And we felt rushed. So I would do just one of the areas and come back for the other half. Just my opionion thought.

Happy travel

Oz a dorm will cost $20-$30 pp depending on location - obviously more in big cities - if camping you will pay about the same but for 2 people (bummer if there is only 1 of u!)
Food you will probably end up spending $20 at least - assuming you don't drink much and cook most of the time
Activities - will vary widely depending on your interests - I assume you are going to include other states not just NSW - you could easily do coastal Qlds or vic in that time ?

find out about the Youth Hostel Organisation, i think you pay a membership fee to join, but make that back in cheap accomodation on the road.

Is this in pounds? The symbols isn't displaying properly on my PC.

If yes, 25 pounds a day is probably fine for SE Aisa and Bali, but I'd say you'd be struggling a bit in NZ, Aus and Fiji, assuming you want to do anything other than eat, sleep and move around a bit between places.
