Hey Guys,

In several months I will be taking on the Pan American Highway. From Alaska to Argentina by any means necessary.

It won't be my first epic adventure but it certainly will be my finest!

So I've trawled the web for information, started to read several books about people that have done it on bikes and in off road vehicles. But I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience in this trip, or what would be a good place to begin researching. Also things to be aware of aside from the obvious.

Thanks So Much

Jono

Hi JonoCusack!

Welcome to TT!

I'd suggest to make a search in the Central America branch to know what are the options to go from Panama to Colombia by surface transport. If the search doesn't provide enough results, you could ask about them in that branch.

The route from Mexico to Panama and from Colombia to Argentina (through Ecuador, Peru and Chile) can be easily made by bus.

Yes, you are going to need to look at seaborne options to get across the Darien Gap from Panama to Colombia. They typically run $300 to $500 per person but I'm not aware of any that also take cars or motorcycles. Most go to Cartagena but you can also look up (i.e. Google) the Darien Gapster if you want to stay truer to the Pan-American Highway route.

Just research the various countries you plan to cross. I've joined the dots (not in one go but over time) from Washington DC to Ushuaia and much more in S. America (including the boat from Panama to Colombia). It's easily done with public transport.

Without knowing what you think is obvious, it's hard to answer that.

Where is the best long haul bus to Ushuaia ...?
